Here Are Six Questions About Indoor Plants from Our Readers:

Do plants clean the air? The tangible physical benefits from having a few plants around increase the air quality. Did you know that toxins and contaminants in the air come from chemicals found in our everyday routines, such as cleaning products, treated wood, and even the fabrics inhere are upholstery, bedding, and clothing?

Compounds like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene are found in just about any home and office these days, along with excess carbon dioxide. These compounds can cause many people to experience headaches, dizziness, asthma, and fatigue. Indoor plants filter the air ridding the space of indoor pollution.

Why do houseplants lose their leaves? Shock is the most common cause of leaf drop and most often caused by a sudden change in conditions. Shock is usually a response to dramatic changes in temperature, humidity, light levels, or watering habits. For instance, newly acquired plants often go into shock as they transition from the perfect conditions of a greenhouse to less-than-ideal home conditions. The same is true for freshly repotted or divided plants.

How do I prevent pests on my houseplants? – According to Hunker, “ There are different bug types such as aphids, white or red spider mites, mealybugs, whiteflies, and thrips that like to feed on houseplants. These bugs can suck the juices from plants, eat their leaves, and even feed on their roots”.

·      Damp Cloth - The first thing to try is plain water on a damp cloth. Wipe off all the leaves on your houseplants, both the tops and the bottoms. This will remove both bugs and their eggs from your houseplants' leaves.

·      Soapy Water - If you find that a damp cloth is not enough to remove a bug infestation on your houseplants, try a bucket of room temperature mild detergent soapy water and a sponge.

·      Homemade Bug Spray - You need a clean spray bottle, vegetable oil, and a mild detergent. Fill the spray bottle with room temperature water, add a few drops of mild detergent, make sure it has no fragrance or additives, and add a teaspoon of vegetable oil. Put the spray nozzle back on the bottle and shake it.

How often should I water, and how do I know if they need water? There are so many variables and factors involved that there isn’t a set answer to how often you should water your houseplants. Overwatering and underwatering are often responsible for killing plants. Overwatering = no oxygen to the roots, which leads to root rot. Too little water = the roots dry out. Most beginners tend to overwater their plants.

What kind of fertilizer do house plants need? For general purposes, indoor plant fertilizers are sufficient for most houseplants. They contain three important macronutrients: nitrogen (N) for foliage growth, phosphorous (P) to promote roots, and potassium (K) for healthy blooms. Some fertilizers also contain micronutrients like manganese, boron, and magnesium.
